Many Fathers, Reformers, and Evangelicals

The apostolic fathers advanced no single theory of the atonement, but articulated a number of biblical motifs. Clement of Rome described the work of Christ, using the language of substitution. “Because of the love which he felt for us, Jesus Christ our Lord gave his blood for us by the will of God, his body for our bodies, and his soul for our souls.”33 Ignatius expressed the idea of our Lord’s vicarious atonement: “All these sufferings, assuredly, he underwent for our sake, that we might be saved.”34 According to the Epistle to Diognetus, Christ’s substitutionary death justifies the wicked, and his righteousness covers sins:
